Vimy Centennial Dinner
7 Apr @ 11:00 pm - 8 Apr @ 3:00 am UTC+0
We are excited to announce that the 2017 Vimy Centennial Celebration Dinner will take place on Monday March 20, 2017 at the Arcadian Court in Toronto. The proceeds of the dinner will go towards two important Vimy Centennial Legacy initiatives described below:
The Vimy Foundation Centennial Park will be located adjacent to the Vimy monument in France. This unique area will be comprised of 100 Vimy Oak trees (direct descendants of acorns collected following the battle in April 1917) as well as benches and reflective areas in full view of the famous monument.
The Vimy Centennial Legacy Fund will ensure that outstanding young Canadians continue to be inspired by our history at Vimy Ridge and other First World War sites. Our fundraising goal of $500,000 will help send 25 students to travel to Europe each year for the next five years and ensure our youth ‘walk through the footsteps of history’ and experience Canadian history first hand.
At Vimy Ridge, nearly 100 years ago, 100,000 Canadian soldiers gathered for the first time as a united fighting force. Commanded in part by Canadian officers, they achieved the unachievable and took one of the most heavily defended German positions of the entire Western front. It is said by many historians that at Vimy Ridge, Canada emerged from a colony to become a nation. It was not simply a battle – it was Canada’s coming of age. The Vimy Foundation was established to preserve and to promote Canada’s entire First World War legacy, through its educational programs for Canadian students and its awareness building activities.
